The Materials for Energy blog (www.materialsforenergy.org) has been set up by the Materials Research Society to provide a forum to discuss the scientific issues surrounding all areas of materials for energy: basic research, scale-up and commercialization, deployment, environmental impact including raw materials acquisition, and disposal technologies. The host of this blog is Russell R. Chianelli, who shares the stage with a series of invited experts serving as co-hosts. About the Materials Research Society and MRS Bulletin In its April 2008 issue, MRS Bulletin published a special expanded issue, Harnessing Materials for Energy, focused on the most important materials research challenges that need to be addressed to move toward secure, affordable, and environmentally sustainable energy to meet the world’s accelerating energy needs. The articles presented an objective and global view of the energy challenges spanning the full energy chain including production, storage, distribution, use, and efficiency. This blog builds on the MRS Bulletin special issue and MRS’s growing programming on energy, and serves as a companion to “Energy Quarterly,” a recurring section in MRS Bulletin examining the juncture of emerging science, cost-effective scale-up, and public interest through interviews, analyses, and news. This blog includes news, links, reports and commentary relevant to the materials challenges across a broad spectrum of energy topics and seeks participation across disciplinary and geographical boundaries. We look forward to a healthy dialogue and discussions by readers, and we encourage posting of comments and feedback.
